What an AI Keyboard Does on iPhone (and Which Ones Run on Your Device)
An AI keyboard is a keyboard that does more than type. You speak, and it writes. You select a sentence, and it rewrites it. The part that varies from app to app is where that AI runs: on your phone or on a server.
What an AI keyboard can do
Dictation with cleanup: punctuation, paragraphs and capitalization handled for you, so what lands is what you meant.
Rewrites in place: change the tone of a message, shorten it, or draft a reply on the text in the field you are already in, with no copy and paste.
Translation: turn what you wrote or said into another language without leaving the app.
Where the AI runs matters
Cloud keyboards send your speech or text to a server. That can give strong results, and it means the app needs a connection and an account, and your words pass through a company's systems.
On-device keyboards run the model on the iPhone. DictaWiz runs dictation and its AI skills on the device by default, with two on-device engines to choose from: Apple Intelligence or Gemma. It works with no internet connection and no account. Cloud engines are used only if you add your own API key.
About Allow Full Access
iOS requires Allow Full Access for any keyboard that uses the microphone, DictaWiz included. DictaWiz uses it to power dictation and AI skills, and does not log what you type. You can turn it off in Settings at any time.
